The new Android phone by Casio is a military spec smartphone that is shock resistant and water resistant. That is great feature for construction workers and outdoors men but lets get one thing straight the phone is not water proof and the phone is not indestructible the phone is a lot more rugged than all the other Android phones on Verizon Wireless. The picture above is a Commando with a crack screen that was supposedly dropped from a 4 foot high fall.
On the Casio’s website they claim during testing the phone was dropped from 4 feet 26 times during testing. I guess this phone had a unlucky 27th fall.

On 1/11/11 at 11am Verizon Wireless and Apple will announce the arrival of the legendary Apple iPhone on the Verizon Wireless network. The iPhone will have the LTE radio included so 4G speed is included.
The phone will go on sale in February and hopefully inventory of this device wont be like it was when at&t released each new version.
I have no news if it will only be carried in corporate stores. I am hoping Apple learnt if the want to sell more phones let indirect have it.
The problem with people unlocking and shipping the phone out of the country should not be an issue but who knows we do have other CDMA carriers around the world.

My prediction on twitter in December was correct. @mobilewiseguy I predict Verizon Wireless will get the Apple iPhone sometime around the end of january or February because (cont) http://tl.gd/7ddaen

Dialing a phone number from a Blackberry device is very easy. Some phone numbers have letters in it and the keyboard on a Blackberry makes it difficult to match the number with the letter because of the non traditional dial pad.

The solution is very simple when dialing a phone number like 1800mattress just dial the 1800 normally and when its time to dial the letters hold the alt key down and press the corresponding letters. The Blackberry device will send the correct tones need to call the phone number.

When calling business with a phone number that requires you to spell out the name of the person you are trying to reach do the same, hold down the alt key and spell out the name. The Blackberry will send the correct tones needed to access that name in that business phone’s directory.

Two weeks ago I could not listen to my favorite application Pandora on my Blackberry Bold
9700 which is unlocked from AT&T and being used on T-Mobile data only.
I have used all my applications for over a month without any problems on T-Mobile.
The Bold 9700 unlocked from at&t works only on EDGE which is 2G on T-Mobile, it will not work 3G on other carriers, but I had no problems on the EDGE, I used all the functions, applications including Pandora.

Now about two weeks ago when I tried to use Pandora I was getting an error
(Critical tunnel failure). It would not sign me in to the Pandora application.
So I deleted Pandora and re installed it, that didn’t work. Next I wiped my Blackberry clean, which puts it back to factory settings and erases all of the content, applications, settings and contacts.
I then reinstalled all my previous contents. That did not work also, I then
decided to download another music radio application to use in the mean time so I downloaded Slacker Radio. Slacker worked for a day then prompt me to re-input my user name and password. I did but Slacker gave me an error saying it was wrong. I then had to reset the password and it would work for a few minutes, then prompt me to re-enter the user name and password again and again.

Now I am of the opinion it was something in the Blackberry software that was causing Pandora and Slacker not to work.

I did some research on the web and came to the conclusion that it was my APN setting. The setting was still set on AT&T which was (wap.cingular).

I put a call into T-Mobile tech support who then transferred me to RIM support and after explaining the problem and stating it was an unlocked Blackberry from AT&T the tech from RIM then told me the APN setting for T-mobile is wap.voicestream.com.

Now Pandora and Slacker is working properly and the fix was simple. The APN
setting is under options, advanced options then TCP/IP. The T-Mobile setting
does not have a user name or password so un-check that box. At&t had
wap@cingular.com and the password was blanked out.

I can not stand being without my Blackberry so I unlocked my Blackberry from at&t and activated the device on T-Mobile with a data only plan. What is a data only plan you may ask.
Well I was told by the T-Mobile rep that I could only use the internet but I found that not to be completely correct. I did send text from the device and using Google voice but when I try to make a call I was sent to a recording saying that this is not allowed and to call customer service.
I went to Myt-mobile.com to checkout my services and confirm if any additional charges.

The first thing I notice after registering and logging in was my data usage that shown for the day but I did see text that I sent. The text was not shown but I saw unlimited picture messaging so I clicked the chat button on T-Mobile’s site to get a better explanation of the plan.
After the conversation I emailed the whole transcript to myself and it is copied below.

You have been connected to _Cavin H._Cavin H:
Hi Curtis , welcome to T-Mobile live Chat. I’m
Cavin and I will be happy to assist you. Please give me a moment to review your question._
Cavin H: I can see where this can be a concern for you, I know you want to make sure that you are not charged for anything extra._
Cavin H: I will be more than happy to look into this for you.
Curtis Matthews: ok_
Cavin H: One moment please._Cavin H: I am still researching this, please allow me 2-3 more minutes.
Curtis Matthews: ok_
Cavin H: Thank you._
Cavin H: It is unlimited text messaging.
Curtis Matthews: Are you sure_
Cavin H: Let me double check.
Curtis Matthews: Online under my account it says unlimited picture messages_
Cavin H: I do see that._
Cavin H: It does not include text, sorry about that.Curtis Matthews: So I do not have text but I have unlimited picture messages?_
Cavin H: Correct.
Curtis Matthews: So I can not text or do I get charged?_
Cavin H: You will get charged.
Curtis Matthews: What will I be charged?_
Cavin H: $0.20 per message.
Curtis Matthews: Why then can I not see the usage online if I sent text_
Cavin H: Because it hasn’t shown that there have been any sent to this point.
Curtis Matthews: I did send a couple about 5 hours ago._
Cavin H: It hasn’t shown up on the system, yet.
Curtis Matthews: But all the data usage shows now. So what you are telling me is that I will see the text usage tomorrow for text?_
Cavin H: More than likely.
Curtis Matthews: Can you check to see for sure._
Cavin H: Unfortuantely, we can only check, when it shows up on our end.Curtis Matthews: So instead of sending a text if I send the message as a MMS I will not get billed?_
Cavin H: Correct.
Curtis Matthews: That does not make sense but ok._
Cavin H: It is an odd little plan.Curtis Matthews: Very odd
Curtis Matthews: So I can block text and only use MMS?_
Cavin H: No, we can only block text and mms.
Curtis Matthews: So if I send someone a MMS and they reply y text I get charged unless they reply as a MMS. But you can send a MMS without a picture or any attachment._
Cavin H: You would have to send a mms from a picture on the phone.
Curtis Matthews: No I can just select MMS from my Blackberry and it gives me the option of attaching pictures, music or a voice note._
Cavin H: Then you can.
Curtis Matthews: ok thanks_
Cavin H: Not a problem._
Cavin H: Is there anything else we can assist you with today?
Curtis Matthews: no thanks_
Cavin H: Thank you for contacting T-Mobile Chat, have a great evening!

AT&T and Motorola have released an update to the Motorola BACKFLIP device to enhance overall performance of the device. This software update provides improvements to messaging, display, camera, and Bluetooth functionality. This update will upgrade BACKFLIP devices from software version 0.12.1199 to 0.13.35.

This Blur Over The Air (BOTA) update will be a two stage process. The first update will be marked “1 of 2” and will take between 35 seconds and one (1) minute to download over 3G. The second update will be marked “2 of 2” and will take between three (3) and 10 minutes to download over 3G. The updates will download in the background and customers can resume normal operation of the device during the downloads. While customers can use their device as normal during the download process, they will be unable to make and receive calls during the installation of the update.

The update will be made available for 1000 customers on May 13, 2010. The updates will be pushed to customer devices beginning May 20, 2010.

Why the Motorola Backflip sales are low is because the device is a little complicated to understand. This is the first Android operating system device for AT&T and soon to come an HTC and Dell version. Android is Google’s operating system for mobile devices. The Backflip is Motorola Smartphone using Android.

First the Backflip screen is sometimes cluttered with applications and most users do not know how to clean it up to their liking. Second the form factor of having the keyboard on the outside when the device is closed confuses most people. They are not used to seeing the keyboard exposed when the device is closed. Third navigating through its menus is not the easiest, I was confused when trying to use the GPS. I would have thought the Google maps would be the default GPS but the first two GPS applications I saw was AT&T maps and the AT&T Telenav. I am not sure about the first but AT&T Telenav cost $10 a month. It gives you one month free to try it then you must cancel. A lot of customer get this service added by accident.

The keyboard is too flat, the letters should be raised a little. It is hard to do one handed texts or emails. The battery life is terrible, I can’t go a full day. I miss a lot of calls because of reception issues, when sitting next to the Backflip and call it from my Blackberry a lot of times it goes to voicemail.
I tried sending a ringtone by MMS and the Backflip can play the song but I can not save as a ringtone.
(I found a free ringtone application Secret Garden for Android)
My experience with this smartphone is both good and bad. Let me explain how I got a free Motorola Backflip for myself.

AT&T and Motorola had a sales contest for the first few weeks after the launch of the Motorola Backflip. AT&T had this contest in a few markets mine being South Florida. We had to complete two online trainings on the Backflip and submit our sales on a Challenge Rewards website. The contest would give the top sellers in that market a free Motorola Backflip for the most sales entered that week. It was a four week contest and every week you would enter your sales and about 4-5 Backflips were giving out per region. I won my Motorola Backflip in the second week of the contest. I ONLY SOLD ONE! That’s was pathetic for South Florida one of the largest markets for cell phones.

We are now selling a little more and I mean a little and a lot of them come back with the customer complaining that’s its too complicated. Luckily I have not had any returns from my customers yet since I was able to show them how to use the phone a little better.

I am still learning the Backflip but so far I realized the voice dialing sucks, the screen sometimes jumps into a menu by accident and Bluetooth pairing with my Blackberry stereo gateway is very difficult. It could be me but if its hard for me an experience cell phone user the average user would be frustrated.

I can’t wait for the Bold 2 to come for at&t. The new Bold would have more application memory so those apps on Blackberry app world can now be downloaded without slowing the phone down or the battery need to be taken out to reset the application memory. The new Bold will have a 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus. I hope they speed up the camera also. The Bold now is slow to take multiple pictures and freezes when you try to email a picture and take another picture. The Blackberry Bold 2 will also do away with the track ball it will have a touch pad like the Blackberry Curve on T-Mobile. Customers using the track ball have problems getting the ball stuck or dirt gets into it making it hard or impossible to use. I am assuming they will enhance the media player as they have to compete more with the fun factor of the Apple iPhone.
The size of the new Blackberry Bold will look more like the Blackberry 8900 but with the keyboard of the Blackberry Bold. I compared my Bold to a Storm the other day and the Blackberry Storm had much better video quality and the music was louder play with the internal speakers. I watch a video of a air show the my friend took on Lake Michigan and I was impressed. My Blackberry Bold video camera is not as good definitely.
Blackberry Storm 2 will also be out in about a month and from what my Blackberry contact had told me its like night and day compare to the older Blackberry Storm model. I don’t have any exact details as yet but I am sure they are all over the net. I will post any news I get here.

Starting September 6th AT&T will not sell any of their Smart Phones without a data package of at least $30. The only cell phone that AT&T had before that had to have the data package was the Apple iPhone. The other smart phones like the Blackberry or the Samsung Jack could of been purchased without the data package but you would not qualify for the mail-in rebates. That was not bad for someone who wanted an organizer and a full keyboard cell phone to text message with. The data is a great revenue stream for the wireless industry and they do not want to discount the smart phones unless the customer subscribes to a data package.
<a href="http://www.phonescoop.com/news/item.php?n=4733"target="_top">AT&T says you must pay for Data

I have a problem with my application memory leaking on my Blackberry. I have spent weeks and hours on the phone with Blackberry support to fix this issue. On this post I am copying and pasting my emails onto this Blog so you can read our interactions and what I was told to do.

Hello Curtis,

I am sorry to hear that the issue persisted and that you were unable to get the logs from the hand held. I would like to thank you for working with us to try and isolate this issue. Unfortunately, the logs provided did not provide us enough insight as to what was causing the memory loss.

I am glad you got a new hand held and hope that this one brings you more luck in the way that Blackberry is supposed to function. If the issue occurs with the new handheld, I would request you call in on a new ticket. Though if you refer to this one, all steps will be listed on what to do. This is not a common function of the handheld and we do take it very seriously. We want all of our customers to have a positive experience with our product.

I will mark this case as closed at this time, though we can always re-open or refer back to it if needed.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact us.

Thank you again for contacting us.

Sincerely,

I could not duplicate sending the logs. My Blackberry is losing application memory the same way and I do not have any applications downloaded.
I have decided to switch the Blackberry Bold out with the warranty exchange program with at&t.
I have been on the phone with Blackberry support for over 3 hours and weeks have gone by without any results.
I tried to do everything that the Blackberry support team has asked me. If I had a client with the same issue I would advise to switch the unit out because it is defective and I would not want them to spend the hour on the phone with support and not be able to use their Blackberry properly for weeks.

Thanks for you help.

What did the logs say that you got from me? The memory was already leaking out when I sent those logs. I was at 12MB when I sent those and that dropped from 31MB to 12 in a day.

Thank you for the log, on the next email provide the log as an attachment and provide the following information at the same time.

Every day I would like you to document the following.

- What your Memory level is at
On the handheld from the main screen go into Options>Status and document the file free
- What application are you going to install this day
List the name of the program you are going to install after you get the logs. After the application is installed, document the file free again.
On the first day don’t download, on the second download the AppWorld and only the Appworld.

Subject: RE: RQST00006811854 Issues with running out of memory onthehandheld

The 2nd event log my app memory is 10.8mb with no apps install except fo app world

Curtis Matthews

Hello Curtis,

As per our conversation, I would request you do the following to isolate the issue.

Every day I want you to get the Handheld Logs after you document the handheld information. Go through the following commands.
In the Command prompt copy and paste the following.

cd C:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader

In the Apploader folder to get the log type the copy and paste the following command, don’t forget to rename the filename.

loader /eventlog c:\handheldlogs\filename.txt

Make sure to have the .txt at the end of the name otherwise it won’t create the text file.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact us.

Hello Curtis,

Your handheld still has the Vlingo app which is most likely the cultrate in this situation. I would recommend that we backup the handheld, Security Wipe it erasing all applications. Make sure Vlingo has been removed, then restore the backup and only install those applications you need (No Vlingo 2.0). We would enable logging as well just in case the issue persists.

Vlingo has released a 3.0 version which is now available, it could be the older version had issues. Though this new version costs money.

Let me know what applications you are planning on installing before you proceed to install them. This way I can try and copy your configuration. If you would like me to call you in regards to this issue, let me know a time and number to best reach you.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact us.

Hello Curtis,

Here are the instructions on how to enable handheld logging and get the logs from the handheld

1. Can you perform a test on a good and bad handheld and provide fresh BES logs, screenshots from the handhelds and the handheld logs. (this is to clarify issue for possible escalation)
Prior to test, enable Handheld Logging
From the main screen on the handheld, hold down the ‘ALT’ button and type the letters “L G L G” once you let go you will be in the EventLog
Press in the ‘Menu’ button and select “Options” and change the Min log level to “Debug Info”. Then save your settings.

When you have reproduced the issue, go through the following steps to get the handheld logs and information.

You will need to either have the BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.7 installed or WEBSL which can be downloaded from www.blackberry.com/upgrade.
Once installed, navigate in DOS to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader, or on a dual core system, C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader.

I would like you to gather the handheld logs and Device Info. Here are the commands needed.
- Eventlog loader.exe /eventlog “c:\outfilename.txt”
- Deviceinfo loader.exe /deviceinfo “c:\outfilename.txt”

Hello Curtis,

I am sorry that you are still having the issue. I don’t beleive that this is a hardware issue and replacing the handheld may not resolve this. I would like to help you resolve this issue if possible, if you can let me know a date and time that would best suit you for a call back so we may hopefully resolve this issue. As well if you can provide the call back number that you wish me to call.
