Verizon Wireless has phones that are great for visually Impaired customers needs. I recently got a call from a friend of a previous client he wanted me to help him find a phone for the visually impaired. I did a little research and realized a few Verizon Wireless phones have the ability to speak all of the functions. The phone has voice readouts and will speak all the digits when dialing the menu functions and the incoming text messages.
I showed the client two phone models when he met me at a Zephyrhills store. One was the Samsung Haven which is a basic phone without a camera or Bluetooth technology and the other was the LG Octane a phone with a QWERTY keyboard for texting. Both phones did what he wanted but he was a big texter so the LG Octane was his choice.
My smartphone also has the ability to speak all the commands but I never tried the texting part of it to see if it would read the incoming text but I am sure if the phone did not have that capability there would be an application for it.

Turn your Smartphone off once a day and pull the battery out once a week for best performance. If you are like me and use many applications daily you should do the recommended procedure above. This will stop unnecessary applications from running in the background and prolong battery life daily.

Some people like using a task manager application to stop applications from running but these task killer app use more memory and power than they save. Android phones with 2.1 or newer software have a built in task killer and adding a task killer defeats the purpose.

Yesterday I had a client complain his battery died after a few hours. After examining his HTC Incredible 2 I realized he had downloaded a battery saver application and that was the culprit. That app ate up 72% of his battery so we deleted the app and problemsolved was solved.

The older versions of Android operating systems did require a task killer but Android learned from this and corrected the issue with later updates and all new Android phones are already equipped with battery saver and app killer options.

Read this article below from Motorola concerning turning your phone off.

I am on the way to Trinidad and just got off the phone with at&t. The customer service representative argued with me about texting outside the country. The at&t representative said that it would cost to send and receive text when outside the country. I told him if you have a text package the incoming messages would come out of your package. He said this is what he does for a living and I should go to att.com to verify what he said.

This is how at&t wireless charges for texting overseas. If you have a text package your incoming text come out of the package. For example if you have unlimited texting you can receive unlimited incoming text while overseas, if you have the $5 200 text package you can get 200 free incoming text while overseas but if you go over your package the the cost is $.50 a text or $1.30 for a picture. Out going messages are always billed, see below for more details.

This was copied directly from att.com website.

Sending Text, Picture, and Video Messages When Outside the U.S.

Text Messages $0.50 per message sent

Picture and Video Messages $1.30 per message sent

Home pay-per-use or package rates apply to all text, picture, or video messages received when roaming internationally. See your Rate Plan Brochure for details.

Data usage pay-per-use rate is $.0195/KB, except in Canada where rate is $.015/KB.

To save on data usage when roaming internationally with your smartphone, iPhone, or laptop see att.com/worldpackages.

A month ago I went out looking for an inexpensive sound system for the house that would work with our television. I looked at surround sound systems at Best Buy but the prices were $500 to over $1000 and I was not about spend that much money on a system for music.
I don’t have a regular stereo in my house all or most of the music I listen to comes from my phone (Pandora, Slacker and downloaded music).

The solution I picked was an LG sound bar that comes with a wireless subwoofer and Bluetooth technology. The LG system cost $249.99 and it works with my TV and Sony PlayStation using optical cables and my Motorola Xoom, Motorola Droid X, Motorola Back flip and all my Bluetooth enable devices can play the music through this system.

I don’t have real surround sound but the sound is much better and now I have a wireless stereo using any of my devices.

The new Android phone by Casio is a military spec smartphone that is shock resistant and water resistant. That is great feature for construction workers and outdoors men but lets get one thing straight the phone is not water proof and the phone is not indestructible the phone is a lot more rugged than all the other Android phones on Verizon Wireless. The picture above is a Commando with a crack screen that was supposedly dropped from a 4 foot high fall.
On the Casio’s website they claim during testing the phone was dropped from 4 feet 26 times during testing. I guess this phone had a unlucky 27th fall.

The other day I needed another internet connection for my laptop so I downloaded an application called PDAnet on my laptop. PDAnet allows you to teather your PDA to your computer and use the PDA as a wireless modem. Now I can use my Motorola Backflip as a modem to access the internet on my laptop and desktop.

I have heard about this application before but I never took the time and looked into it. I have a Verizon Wireless data card that I use for my laptop and desktop computers. I have used the Verizon Wireless data card for all my internet needs for a few years now.

My girlfriend is always using my data card on the desktop so I tried out PDAnet and to my surprise it was as easy as 123.

I did a Google search for pdanet and the first website I saw on the search I clicked on it and download the software specific for Vista and Android. The installation process took less than 5 minutes to get it up an running. The internet speed is remarkably fast and it has not given me any issues as of yet, plus because I am using an at&t Android phone I still can talk on the phone while surfing the web from my laptop.

I do have a warning at&t has limits on your data now and you can easily go over using your phone as a modem. I have unlimited data with at&t that I am grandfather in on but I will still have to be cautious because at&t and the other wireless carriers do not want you to do this with your PDA phone without paying for the teathering feature. The teathering feature with most wireless providers range in price from $20 to $30 a month and the usage is limited to 2Gb to 5GB.

The PDAnet application that I downloaded is a great solution for anyone who needs to use a computer on the road. I now have another option to connect my computers to web.

The PDAnet allowed me to surf sites on any computer with my Backflip but it would not let me go to secure sites (https) unless I upgraded the PDAnet for a one time fee of $15.95. I paid the one time fee of $15.95 and now I am able to go to any site without any problems. This fee is transferable if you change Android phones and it can be used on any computer.

PDAnet works with most smartphones and operating systems (Blackberry, Apple OS, Android and Palm).

<!--
google_ad_client = "pub-2667468107728656";
/* 300x250, created 11/6/10 */
google_ad_slot = "9014632785";

Dialing a phone number from a Blackberry device is very easy. Some phone numbers have letters in it and the keyboard on a Blackberry makes it difficult to match the number with the letter because of the non traditional dial pad.

The solution is very simple when dialing a phone number like 1800mattress just dial the 1800 normally and when its time to dial the letters hold the alt key down and press the corresponding letters. The Blackberry device will send the correct tones need to call the phone number.

When calling business with a phone number that requires you to spell out the name of the person you are trying to reach do the same, hold down the alt key and spell out the name. The Blackberry will send the correct tones needed to access that name in that business phone’s directory.

I wanted to do quick video and post it to the web using my cell phone. I thought it would be easy to take the video and then upload it from the phone to YouTube so it can be used on my Blog.

I only can take a short video with my Blackberry Bold 9700 and send the video through MMS to YouTube. The video is sent as a multimedia message to YouTube and the anyone can see your video on YouTube. After the video is uploaded to Youtube it can be link to websites and or Blogs.

The issue I have is that a MMS video is only 30 seconds and the quality is not as good as normal videos that can be taken with the Blackberry Bold 9700. A normal video can be hours long as long as you have room on your media card.

I have a few other ways to upload longer and better quality videos to YouTube. First is after taking a good quality video with the phone take my media card and use the SD adapter to upload the video from my laptop to YouTube.

Secondly is my Motorola Backflip an Android device let’s me upload videos taken with it directly to YouTube without the 30 second restriction. I am sure it has something to do with Google owning Android mobile operating system and Youtube. My first test was a 5 minute video I took waiting for the draw bridge to open. I realized later more than 2 minutes took way too long to upload directly from the cell phone.

Then I remembered using an application on my Blackberry Bold 9000. It is called Qik, this application allow you to stream the video live and the video can be an hour or more. I stopped using Qik only because it is not supported on my Blackberry Bold 9700. Qik works on many devices Android, iPhones, Windows Mobile and some models of the Blackberry.

Qik is the easiest way to put videos on the web.

Check out some videos on my Qik website.

Two weeks ago I could not listen to my favorite application Pandora on my Blackberry Bold
9700 which is unlocked from AT&T and being used on T-Mobile data only.
I have used all my applications for over a month without any problems on T-Mobile.
The Bold 9700 unlocked from at&t works only on EDGE which is 2G on T-Mobile, it will not work 3G on other carriers, but I had no problems on the EDGE, I used all the functions, applications including Pandora.

Now about two weeks ago when I tried to use Pandora I was getting an error
(Critical tunnel failure). It would not sign me in to the Pandora application.
So I deleted Pandora and re installed it, that didn’t work. Next I wiped my Blackberry clean, which puts it back to factory settings and erases all of the content, applications, settings and contacts.
I then reinstalled all my previous contents. That did not work also, I then
decided to download another music radio application to use in the mean time so I downloaded Slacker Radio. Slacker worked for a day then prompt me to re-input my user name and password. I did but Slacker gave me an error saying it was wrong. I then had to reset the password and it would work for a few minutes, then prompt me to re-enter the user name and password again and again.

Now I am of the opinion it was something in the Blackberry software that was causing Pandora and Slacker not to work.

I did some research on the web and came to the conclusion that it was my APN setting. The setting was still set on AT&T which was (wap.cingular).

I put a call into T-Mobile tech support who then transferred me to RIM support and after explaining the problem and stating it was an unlocked Blackberry from AT&T the tech from RIM then told me the APN setting for T-mobile is wap.voicestream.com.

Now Pandora and Slacker is working properly and the fix was simple. The APN
setting is under options, advanced options then TCP/IP. The T-Mobile setting
does not have a user name or password so un-check that box. At&t had
wap@cingular.com and the password was blanked out.

in the background and eating up battery life. I searched the device for a task
manager but could not find one. On my Blackberry Bold 9700 when I held down the
Blackberry button I can see what applications that are open select the running
app then close it. The Motorola Backflip does not have that option built in.

I found an application on the Android market place call advanced task killer
that let’s you shut down all your applications. It will give you a check list so
you have the option to leave some applications running. I recommend this app for
all Android users.

I can not stand being without my Blackberry so I unlocked my Blackberry from at&t and activated the device on T-Mobile with a data only plan. What is a data only plan you may ask.
Well I was told by the T-Mobile rep that I could only use the internet but I found that not to be completely correct. I did send text from the device and using Google voice but when I try to make a call I was sent to a recording saying that this is not allowed and to call customer service.
I went to Myt-mobile.com to checkout my services and confirm if any additional charges.

The first thing I notice after registering and logging in was my data usage that shown for the day but I did see text that I sent. The text was not shown but I saw unlimited picture messaging so I clicked the chat button on T-Mobile’s site to get a better explanation of the plan.
After the conversation I emailed the whole transcript to myself and it is copied below.

You have been connected to _Cavin H._Cavin H:
Hi Curtis , welcome to T-Mobile live Chat. I’m
Cavin and I will be happy to assist you. Please give me a moment to review your question._
Cavin H: I can see where this can be a concern for you, I know you want to make sure that you are not charged for anything extra._
Cavin H: I will be more than happy to look into this for you.
Curtis Matthews: ok_
Cavin H: One moment please._Cavin H: I am still researching this, please allow me 2-3 more minutes.
Curtis Matthews: ok_
Cavin H: Thank you._
Cavin H: It is unlimited text messaging.
Curtis Matthews: Are you sure_
Cavin H: Let me double check.
Curtis Matthews: Online under my account it says unlimited picture messages_
Cavin H: I do see that._
Cavin H: It does not include text, sorry about that.Curtis Matthews: So I do not have text but I have unlimited picture messages?_
Cavin H: Correct.
Curtis Matthews: So I can not text or do I get charged?_
Cavin H: You will get charged.
Curtis Matthews: What will I be charged?_
Cavin H: $0.20 per message.
Curtis Matthews: Why then can I not see the usage online if I sent text_
Cavin H: Because it hasn’t shown that there have been any sent to this point.
Curtis Matthews: I did send a couple about 5 hours ago._
Cavin H: It hasn’t shown up on the system, yet.
Curtis Matthews: But all the data usage shows now. So what you are telling me is that I will see the text usage tomorrow for text?_
Cavin H: More than likely.
Curtis Matthews: Can you check to see for sure._
Cavin H: Unfortuantely, we can only check, when it shows up on our end.Curtis Matthews: So instead of sending a text if I send the message as a MMS I will not get billed?_
Cavin H: Correct.
Curtis Matthews: That does not make sense but ok._
Cavin H: It is an odd little plan.Curtis Matthews: Very odd
Curtis Matthews: So I can block text and only use MMS?_
Cavin H: No, we can only block text and mms.
Curtis Matthews: So if I send someone a MMS and they reply y text I get charged unless they reply as a MMS. But you can send a MMS without a picture or any attachment._
Cavin H: You would have to send a mms from a picture on the phone.
Curtis Matthews: No I can just select MMS from my Blackberry and it gives me the option of attaching pictures, music or a voice note._
Cavin H: Then you can.
Curtis Matthews: ok thanks_
Cavin H: Not a problem._
Cavin H: Is there anything else we can assist you with today?
Curtis Matthews: no thanks_
Cavin H: Thank you for contacting T-Mobile Chat, have a great evening!

When traveling overseas one of the best ways to save money on roaming fees is to buy an unlocked GSM cell phone and use a prepaid sim card from that country that you are visiting. Prepaid cell phone service is sold everywhere overseas in the airport and almost every corner block. The calls are much less expensive and most of the time you have unlimited incoming calls. The last time I went to Trinidad I spent $30 for the sim card and my minutes for the two weeks I was over there. If I had used my regular phone roaming it would of cost me $2 a minute and with all the calls I made my bill would have been in the hundreds for the roaming cost. I unlocked my Blackberry Bold 9000 before I went and used a sim card from Bmobile a local wireless carrier.

An unlocked cell phone can use any sim card from any GSM wireless provider. One of the important things to look for in an unlocked cell phone is the GSM frequency. Some GSM cell phone have one or two frequencies like the Motorola F3. The Motorola F3 is 850/1900 a 2 band phone that would work on any GSM provider in the United States since the U.S. only use two GSM bands 850/1900 it would not be a problem. AT&T uses 850/1900 and T-Mobile uses 1900 GSM networks but countries like Europe and the rest of the world use sometimes the 900 or the 1800 GSM networks.

Now the best phone to have for roaming is the quad band GSM, which is used for global calls where GSM network coverage is present. The Motorola V3 Razr works on these GSM Networks: GSM 850, 900, GSM 1800 and GSM 1900. The Quad band GSM phone is always the best type of unlocked cell phone for traveling.

AT&T has a new package for texting when roaming overseas. The package cost $10 and gives you 50 free out going messages. That breaks it down to $.20 a message and anything over the 50 included in that package is $.40.

The incoming text that you receive when roaming internationally is bill at your current home package. That means if you have unlimited text you can receive unlimited text when roaming internationally. If you have the $5 200 message package at home then that 200 would apply for your incoming texts when roaming internationally.

This was great news for international travelers because without the $10 roaming text package you will be billed $.50 for each outgoing text and $1.30 for each MMS (pictures, video) messages.

For more information on this and any other of the roaming packages call AT&T international department @ 877-707-9208

This Blog was translated using a free application from Blackberry app world, Interlecta translator. I do not know Spanish, so this is a great application. There were many other languages that I could of use in the translator but I live in South Florida which is 80% hispanic. This works for texts, emails and does a reverse translation. —-original-en-es-20091013074935—-Subject: U-verse customer serviceMy U-verse has a technical support which is a 24/7 free phone support. If a tech has to come out to the house its a $55 charge that I learned the hard way. When they hooked up my Uverse television and internet they changed my wireless network and I could not use it. I did call the technical support on the phone to see what we could do to get it running, after 30 minutes on the phone they said they had to send a tech out to repair it. The tech came out and changed my network settings back to what I had before and everything worked again. It was not until my next bill that I saw the $55 charge. I called and said that no one told me I would be charged and it was there fault that the network was not properly set up before, they eventually credited my account for the $55. That was the first issue with U-verse technical support a few nights back my internet was running slow. I was getting between 3.0 and 12.3 Megs. I have U300 television and U-verse 18 Megs internet, so I called technical support late at night around 3am. The representative was from a call center most likely in India from her accent. We cleared a lot of files on my computer and on the U-verse system, the whole process took about an hour. She then said for my trouble she would give me free for one month U-verse 300 television, I told her that’s what I have now, she said no I have U200. I told her I have Showtime so I definitely have U300 because I would not have the premium channels, she then skipped talking about it again. She then told me to test my internet speeds. I was now getting a consistent 12 to 12.5 megs speed, I thanked her and then asked why I never get over the 12 when I pay for 18 megs, I was told I do not have 18 I have 12 and to call customer service in the morning to go over my plan. I asked her to please note the account with all the things we spoke about. I know personally how important it is to have the notes on the account so the next representative would know what’s going on. She said she did add the notes, I then asked her please make sure the notes are good because that is very important, I did not want to spend all that time on the phone again, I was assured it was done. I did call customer service the next day and the customer service representative was rude and told me I had U300 and 18 megs and this is a technical support issue. He then transferred me to technical support which was an American voice, I guess at night the calls get transferred to India. He told me I have U200 and 12 megs internet. I told him read the notes and he said there were no notes and the tech at night lied because the notes would have been on my account if she had put any. He then told me he would have to transfer me back to customer service and he would tell them what is occurring. A customer rep got on the line, by this time I was on the phone for 30 minutes. The customer service representative told me she had to call back to technical support and confirm the speed but I told her I could not hold any longer because I was at work and my break was over. She told me that they would call me back after talking to technical support for U-verse. They never called me back from U-verse technical support or customer serv
ice, I had to call the next day. The customer service representative now had seen in the notes that a supervisor was to call me but didn’t. This customer service representative gave me a credit for the 3 months of not having U-verse 18 megs internet speed and I told her don’t even bother to fix it leave me at the 12 megs now. This was a big mission and a normal customer should not have to go through this hassle. I am not a normal customer I sell at&t services including U-verse and I know what I am doing but I still spent hours on the phone and it took a couple of days.

I got an email this morning from Bolt, it said. “Thanks to the contributions of over two million beta testers like you, we are proud to announce that we’re officially dropping the beta tag with today’s release of BOLT 1.5.You will be automatically prompted to upgrade the next time you launch BOLT.Many of the most significant upgrades occur “under the hood,” but you are sure to notice the results – v1.5 is the most reliable, fastest browser we have ever released – more than 15% faster than Beta3.Other new features include the ability to stream videos of any length, a dedicated search bar, a download manager that downloads files directly from BOLT, improved navigation and text rendering, and a caching feature that enables browsing back to a previously visited page without waiting to reload.”
I downloaded the new version and it is faster, then I went YouTube, I was promted to run a wizard for Bolt to test my Video settings. Then the YouTube video played in the Bolt browser, it used to save the video before playing it. It still has issues a four minute video froze a lot, I then switched to WiFi and it was not much better playing the videos on YouTube.
I do like this browser a lot for normal web browsing but it still needs to work on video playback. The best so far is the Skyfire browser that works on my Blackjack 2 but still is not ready for Blackberry. Bolt Browser first trial

Learning how to edit my website and my blog from my Blackberry Bold is getting better. I am always with my Blackberry and I want to use the Blackberry Bold to do more like edit and update my website and blog. I did a successful change to my index page on www.wirelessconsultant.net site today. So this is what I did so far by using two browsers and my tasks. I added links, pictures and text to my website quickly and easily. I used my tasks in my Blackberry. First I named a task “index page update iPhone promo”, then I used the notes section as my blank template that I could save and finish editing latter and the tasks’ lets me set reminders and other fields. I did because we all know that the Apple iPhone is an hot item and on September 25th all the 3G and 3Gs model iPhones would get a software update that allows MMS messaging with pictures and other types of media.
AT&T Apple iPhone Sale! Prices Starting at $49 for a refurbished 8GB 3G to $299 for New 32GB 3Gs Apple iPhone
Apple iPhone 3G – 8 GB – Black (Refurb)$49 while supplies last!
So this blog should have an iPhone link and I already put a image link on the index page of wirelessconsultant.net. Now if I had a some HTML training this would make this a lot easier.

I downloaded Bolt a web browser for my Blackberry Bold. What I can say so far is great. This is exactly the way you see the web pages on a computer or the iPhone but on a Blackberry. I am able to go to pages that I could not properly see before and the pages download fast. I can also copy and paste into the url something I could not do with Opera Mini. This new browser allows me to do updates with my Blackberry to Facebook ads, Mobilewiseguy Blog and pull up sites in seconds that took me minutes before in the Blackberry or Media Net browser.

I got the Bolt browser for Crackberry.com I know you will thank me just put this URL www.boltbrowser.com/ in you Blackberry or Media Net browser and download the Bolt browser for Blackberry.

I have been waiting for the new Skyfire browser for Blackberry because it let you see video from Hulu, Youtube, CNN news video and a lot more sites. I downloaded Skyfire to my Samsung Blackjack 2 and my LG Incite but after stumbling on Bolt I am happy to say I will be busy doing a lot more with my Blackberry in the next few days especially with my new Blog
