AT&T needs merger because Verizon Wireless LTE network will dominate the industry with all the new products and services. If I was developing a service or product to be used on a 4G network would I not use the largest, fastest and most reliable network and if things stay the same that will be Verizon Wireless.
The future is data service in real time and LTE is the pathway that most of the world is choosing to follow.

I am on the way to Trinidad and just got off the phone with at&t. The customer service representative argued with me about texting outside the country. The at&t representative said that it would cost to send and receive text when outside the country. I told him if you have a text package the incoming messages would come out of your package. He said this is what he does for a living and I should go to att.com to verify what he said.

This is how at&t wireless charges for texting overseas. If you have a text package your incoming text come out of the package. For example if you have unlimited texting you can receive unlimited incoming text while overseas, if you have the $5 200 text package you can get 200 free incoming text while overseas but if you go over your package the the cost is $.50 a text or $1.30 for a picture. Out going messages are always billed, see below for more details.

This was copied directly from att.com website.

Sending Text, Picture, and Video Messages When Outside the U.S.

Text Messages $0.50 per message sent

Picture and Video Messages $1.30 per message sent

Home pay-per-use or package rates apply to all text, picture, or video messages received when roaming internationally. See your Rate Plan Brochure for details.

Data usage pay-per-use rate is $.0195/KB, except in Canada where rate is $.015/KB.

To save on data usage when roaming internationally with your smartphone, iPhone, or laptop see att.com/worldpackages.

So you’ve decided to get a tablet PC, but you don’t know how to go about choosing the right solution for your needs. Here are a few tips that might help in your decision.

1. First and foremost which is the hardest decision….which operating system do I want to go with? Do I want to go with a chosen leader for ease of use like the Apple iPad? Do I want to have the freedom to add widgets withing Android Honeycomb? Or are you still addicted to your BlackBerry (in an Apple and Android World) that you want to continue the legacy with a BlackBerryPlaybook? This isn’t the easiest of decisions. The last quarter of this year we will see an influx of Tablet makers and this is one decision that cannot be judged by price and specs. Is it for social networking, remote access to your server, or just looking for an easy way to access your company mail on the go.

2. Next…this decision doesn’t get much easier. Which screen size should I choose? They typically range from the small 7 inch screen to the large 13.3 inch screen. Remember, that bigger isn’t always better or more expensive. Unlike desktop monitors, tablet monitors are meant to be small and handy to carry anywhere. Choose a screen that you are comfortable with, but remember sometimes the bigger they are the shorter the battery life will be!

3. What kind of performance are you looking for? Single core processor? Dual core processor or does it even matter? With a world of tablets coming to the table performance doesn’t always = price. The best “bang for your buck” might be in the middle of the road so avoid the most expensive tablets (unless you have money to burn) and check the consumer reviews of the models you have in your sights.

4. Are you looking for expandability? Determining what type of ports might actually determine which operating system you choose. Typical ports include Type I and II PC card slots, SD card reader, USB ports, VGA port, docking connector, microphone jack, and headphone jack, but Apple limits you to only the microphone jack so expandability is what your looking for than an Android tablet might be what your looking for. Take into account what you might be doing on this tablet in a year to make a better informed decision. 5. Battery life is more important than you may think! Here is a great Wiki that shows a complete comparison of the available models out there with their run times. Once you find a style and OS of your future tablet, make sure it meets your demands for battery life.

AT&T just announced it will buy T-Mobile USA for $39 billion. If the transaction gets approved by the government and closes in a year as planned, it will create the nation’s largest wireless carrier by far.

While this is great news for both companies, it’s an awful idea for consumers – and I desperately hope the US antitrust authorities rake this merger over the coals.

An AT&T/T-Mobile merger at least makes more sense than the silly T-Mobile/Sprint idea which was being bandied about. Both carriers use the same technologies: GSM, HSPA+ and LTE. While they’re on different frequency bands, radios which use all of the relevant bands are becoming easier to build.

The merger neatly solves T-Mobile’s long-term problem of not having enough spectrum for LTE, the 4G technology which will soon be a global standard. It gives T-Mobile’s struggling parent, Deutsche Telekom, a gigantic cash infusion. And it lets AT&T once again position itself as the number-one carrier against Verizon Wireless, which leapfrogged AT&T technologically this year with Verizon’s 4G LTE launch.

AT&T is ahead of T-Mobile on building LTE. T-Mobile is far ahead of AT&T on building HSPA+, a intermediate 4G technology that fits right between the carriers’ existing 3G networks and LTE. Together, they could have a smooth and powerful nationwide network.

AT&T is no longer going to allow some online retailers from selling AT&T phones. The details are still a little fuzzy at this time, however word has come from both LetsTalk as well as Wirefly. According to a statement that LetsTalk sent out to their affiliates, this is going to go into effect on March 8th.

“We’re reaching out to let you know of an upcoming change to our carrier offering. Effective March 8th, 2011, LetsTalk as well as other web indirect agents, including Simplexity (Wirefly), will no longer be able to offer AT&T Wireless as a carrier option to our customers.”

In terms of the details coming from Wirefly, they did not give a specific date, however are still mentioning March as the time when AT&T phones sales will stop stating that;

“Unfortunately, circumstances prevent us from being able to deliver on this promise with regard to AT&T phones. It is therefore with regret that I must inform you that effective March, 2011, we will no longer offer AT&T products and services on Wirefly.com.”

All said and done, this seems rather disappointing. After all, companies such as Wirefly have been a perfect spot for those looking to shell out a little less cash at the time of purchase. Take Wirefly for example, they often had the phones priced a bit lower then direct with the carrier, but the also offered free accessories from time to time as well as free activation.
With that, the confusion comes in with which other retailers are going to be affected. And one that we have our eye on, but have not seen anything either way on, is Amazon Wireless.

I must also change my at&t links that I have in the top left corner of this Blog because I am also effected by this move. I was using Simplexity for at&t on the top right but now that link takes you directly to at&t’s site.

The other day I needed another internet connection for my laptop so I downloaded an application called PDAnet on my laptop. PDAnet allows you to teather your PDA to your computer and use the PDA as a wireless modem. Now I can use my Motorola Backflip as a modem to access the internet on my laptop and desktop.

I have heard about this application before but I never took the time and looked into it. I have a Verizon Wireless data card that I use for my laptop and desktop computers. I have used the Verizon Wireless data card for all my internet needs for a few years now.

My girlfriend is always using my data card on the desktop so I tried out PDAnet and to my surprise it was as easy as 123.

I did a Google search for pdanet and the first website I saw on the search I clicked on it and download the software specific for Vista and Android. The installation process took less than 5 minutes to get it up an running. The internet speed is remarkably fast and it has not given me any issues as of yet, plus because I am using an at&t Android phone I still can talk on the phone while surfing the web from my laptop.

I do have a warning at&t has limits on your data now and you can easily go over using your phone as a modem. I have unlimited data with at&t that I am grandfather in on but I will still have to be cautious because at&t and the other wireless carriers do not want you to do this with your PDA phone without paying for the teathering feature. The teathering feature with most wireless providers range in price from $20 to $30 a month and the usage is limited to 2Gb to 5GB.

The PDAnet application that I downloaded is a great solution for anyone who needs to use a computer on the road. I now have another option to connect my computers to web.

The PDAnet allowed me to surf sites on any computer with my Backflip but it would not let me go to secure sites (https) unless I upgraded the PDAnet for a one time fee of $15.95. I paid the one time fee of $15.95 and now I am able to go to any site without any problems. This fee is transferable if you change Android phones and it can be used on any computer.

PDAnet works with most smartphones and operating systems (Blackberry, Apple OS, Android and Palm).

<!--
google_ad_client = "pub-2667468107728656";

I wanted to do quick video and post it to the web using my cell phone. I thought it would be easy to take the video and then upload it from the phone to YouTube so it can be used on my Blog.

I only can take a short video with my Blackberry Bold 9700 and send the video through MMS to YouTube. The video is sent as a multimedia message to YouTube and the anyone can see your video on YouTube. After the video is uploaded to Youtube it can be link to websites and or Blogs.

The issue I have is that a MMS video is only 30 seconds and the quality is not as good as normal videos that can be taken with the Blackberry Bold 9700. A normal video can be hours long as long as you have room on your media card.

I have a few other ways to upload longer and better quality videos to YouTube. First is after taking a good quality video with the phone take my media card and use the SD adapter to upload the video from my laptop to YouTube.

Secondly is my Motorola Backflip an Android device let’s me upload videos taken with it directly to YouTube without the 30 second restriction. I am sure it has something to do with Google owning Android mobile operating system and Youtube. My first test was a 5 minute video I took waiting for the draw bridge to open. I realized later more than 2 minutes took way too long to upload directly from the cell phone.

Then I remembered using an application on my Blackberry Bold 9000. It is called Qik, this application allow you to stream the video live and the video can be an hour or more. I stopped using Qik only because it is not supported on my Blackberry Bold 9700. Qik works on many devices Android, iPhones, Windows Mobile and some models of the Blackberry.

Qik is the easiest way to put videos on the web.

Check out some videos on my Qik website.

Two weeks ago I could not listen to my favorite application Pandora on my Blackberry Bold
9700 which is unlocked from AT&T and being used on T-Mobile data only.
I have used all my applications for over a month without any problems on T-Mobile.
The Bold 9700 unlocked from at&t works only on EDGE which is 2G on T-Mobile, it will not work 3G on other carriers, but I had no problems on the EDGE, I used all the functions, applications including Pandora.

Now about two weeks ago when I tried to use Pandora I was getting an error
(Critical tunnel failure). It would not sign me in to the Pandora application.
So I deleted Pandora and re installed it, that didn’t work. Next I wiped my Blackberry clean, which puts it back to factory settings and erases all of the content, applications, settings and contacts.
I then reinstalled all my previous contents. That did not work also, I then
decided to download another music radio application to use in the mean time so I downloaded Slacker Radio. Slacker worked for a day then prompt me to re-input my user name and password. I did but Slacker gave me an error saying it was wrong. I then had to reset the password and it would work for a few minutes, then prompt me to re-enter the user name and password again and again.

Now I am of the opinion it was something in the Blackberry software that was causing Pandora and Slacker not to work.

I did some research on the web and came to the conclusion that it was my APN setting. The setting was still set on AT&T which was (wap.cingular).

I put a call into T-Mobile tech support who then transferred me to RIM support and after explaining the problem and stating it was an unlocked Blackberry from AT&T the tech from RIM then told me the APN setting for T-mobile is wap.voicestream.com.

Now Pandora and Slacker is working properly and the fix was simple. The APN
setting is under options, advanced options then TCP/IP. The T-Mobile setting
does not have a user name or password so un-check that box. At&t had
wap@cingular.com and the password was blanked out.

A few months ago I began marketing for new at&t customers by using the at&t referral rewards. This is money just for referring a new at&t customer. First wanted to know all the details of this referral program so I signed up myself and started referring. It took me about three months to make $600, that’s the yearly limit from referrals. Referrals could be for any at&t new service for example U-Verse, DSL, Home phone, Cell phone service and DirecTV. The money is paid on Visa reward cards, which can be spent anywhere Visa is accepted. I paid my U-Verse, got gas, paid my Verizon Wireless bill, Sprint bill and used it at a restaurant. (When using the reward cards at a restaurant it automatically adds the tip on it so be aware of that.)

The only prerequisite for someone to be able to get the reward cards for referring new at&t customers is you must have a at&t service in you name. I have U-Verse and a cell phone with at&t. My girlfriend only has a cell phone service with at&t and she is already spending her reward cards.

When you refer someone you must refer the customer and enter the new billing account number from the service they got from at&t to qualify for the referral. This is where I come in I can get all at&t services for a customer and I will help you with the referral process. It does not matter where they get the at&t service from as long as you refer the customer before the order new at&t service.

I had a cell phone with AT&T since the Bellsouth Mobility days and earlier this year I transferred my number to an ANR line. That is a $20 a month plan for agents and employees of AT&T. I was worried a little because I do not like anyone having control of my number. I guess I should have gone with my instincts, they canceled my line without warning.
Before I had switch ANR line I had a grandfather plan with unlimited incoming calls and unlimited data. When I logged into my account I saw this message that I copied and pasted below. It says non-payment but the bill is not due for another week. By the way it was AT&T that spelled canceled wrong below, I just copied from the website and pasted.

 ◦ AT&T U-verse introduces a new DVR with increased storage capacity. The new AT&T U-verse THDVR can store up to 233 hours of Standard Definition (SD) or 65 hours of High Definition (HD) programming, more than most cable DVRs. Customers who select U-Family, U200, or U300 and do not order HD Service, are not eligible for the larger capacity DVRs. They will continue to receive the standard DVR. Existing customers that demand the larger capacity DVR and threaten to cancel should call
800-288-2020.

2. 120 HD Channels and Growing: All U-verse TV receivers are HD ready. The U-verse TV HD-ready DVR receiver, included with most package options, allows customers to pause, rewind and play back live TV in either HD or SD.

3. Multiview: AT&T U-verse Multiview gives customers the benefit of watching one large screen with audio and three additional picture-in-picture screens all at the same time. Multiview users can switch between channels easily. Total Home DVR customers can set recordings from any channel with the Multiview, which is an AT&T only feature. Multiview channel options include Kids, News, Sports and Subscription Sports.

4. Mobile Remote Access: Mobile Remote Access allows AT&T U-verse customers to never miss a favorite show by allowing them to set their home DVR on the go from any wireless phone, including iPhones and Smartphones or computers. U-verse TV customers can use Mobile Remote Access to browse current and upcoming program listings, schedule, and view their existing Total Home DVR programming. Mobile Remote Access uses 3G or Wi-Fi technology to provide the ability to manage the DVR and TV Guide into a single integrated application.

This the latest news I got on the OS updates for the Motorola Backflip.

The software update (13.37) has been approved. When we spoke last, I mentioned that had we actually submitted a second update that further improves SMS performance which slightly delayed the TA of the load.

The new software patch is being pushed out as we speak and should have already began hitting handsets. Keep in mind, not all handsets will receive the upgrade immediately. It is a ramp up process that should take no more than a few weeks.

All handsets that are being sold in store have the newest load and have had it for a good week or so

. There is also a
$20 price reduction to $79.99 retail with a 2 year that was effective nationally yesterday.

For Android 2.1, we are still targeting Q3. As soon as I have a more solid timeline, I will make sure to share it.

now use the industry’s most popular Smartphone’s on the nation’s fastest
3G network. The plans are:

DataPlus @ $15/200MB (overage = $15/200MB)
DataPro @$25/2GB (overage = $10/1GB)
Both plans include unlimited data via Wi-Fi at home, school, office
(where available), and at more than 20,000 AT&T Hot Spots Nationwide.

Note: Existing Smartphone customers can keep their current $30 Data
Unlimited plan or choose one of the new plans without any penalty or
contract extension.

Personally I am sticking to my unlimited plan on my Blackberry, if you use Pandora, Mobile Videos or any streaming media like I do every day you will go over 2 gigabytes easily.

AT&T and Motorola have released an update to the Motorola BACKFLIP device to enhance overall performance of the device. This software update provides improvements to messaging, display, camera, and Bluetooth functionality.

Why the Motorola Backflip sales are low is because the device is a little complicated to understand. This is the first Android operating system device for AT&T and soon to come an HTC and Dell version. Android is Google’s operating system for mobile devices. The Backflip is Motorola Smartphone using Android.

First the Backflip screen is sometimes cluttered with applications and most users do not know how to clean it up to their liking. Second the form factor of having the keyboard on the outside when the device is closed confuses most people. They are not used to seeing the keyboard exposed when the device is closed. Third navigating through its menus is not the easiest, I was confused when trying to use the GPS. I would have thought the Google maps would be the default GPS but the first two GPS applications I saw was AT&T maps and the AT&T Telenav. I am not sure about the first but AT&T Telenav cost $10 a month. It gives you one month free to try it then you must cancel. A lot of customer get this service added by accident.

The keyboard is too flat, the letters should be raised a little. It is hard to do one handed texts or emails. The battery life is terrible, I can’t go a full day. I miss a lot of calls because of reception issues, when sitting next to the Backflip and call it from my Blackberry a lot of times it goes to voicemail.
I tried sending a ringtone by MMS and the Backflip can play the song but I can not save as a ringtone.
(I found a free ringtone application Secret Garden for Android)
My experience with this smartphone is both good and bad. Let me explain how I got a free Motorola Backflip for myself.

AT&T and Motorola had a sales contest for the first few weeks after the launch of the Motorola Backflip. AT&T had this contest in a few markets mine being South Florida. We had to complete two online trainings on the Backflip and submit our sales on a Challenge Rewards website. The contest would give the top sellers in that market a free Motorola Backflip for the most sales entered that week. It was a four week contest and every week you would enter your sales and about 4-5 Backflips were giving out per region. I won my Motorola Backflip in the second week of the contest. I ONLY SOLD ONE! That’s was pathetic for South Florida one of the largest markets for cell phones.

We are now selling a little more and I mean a little and a lot of them come back with the customer complaining that’s its too complicated. Luckily I have not had any returns from my customers yet since I was able to show them how to use the phone a little better.

I am still learning the Backflip but so far I realized the voice dialing sucks, the screen sometimes jumps into a menu by accident and Bluetooth pairing with my Blackberry stereo gateway is very difficult. It could be me but if its hard for me an experience cell phone user the average user would be frustrated.

What is a Wireless Internet Card?

Wireless internet cards – also called laptop cards, wireless modems and PC cards – are devices that attach to your computer to give you access to the internet over a wireless carrier’s cellular network. Most wireless internet cards now support 3G data speeds, and are convenient if you want to access the internet wirelessly anywhere, anytime, without a Wi-Fi hotspot or a wired connection.

My laptop has Wi-Fi. Do I need a laptop card?

No, but a wireless internet card and data plan from your wireless carrier will let you access the internet at high speeds from anywhere in the country where your carrier provides coverage – indoors, outdoors, or even on the road. With Wi-Fi you need to be within range of a Wi-Fi hot spot (usually 20-30 feet) to get connectivity to the internet.

How much does this kind of connection cost per month?

To use a wireless internet card, you will need a data plan subscription from a wireless carrier. Most carriers’ standard data plan offers 5 GB (or gigabytes) of data use per month for about $60 per month. This information is intended as a guide and actual usage and rates may vary.

So the standard data plan includes up to 5 GB of data – how much is that?

5 GB is the equivalent of 5,120 MB (or megabytes) of data. Using general assumptions, 5 GB per month lets you send or receive 150,000 emails with no attachments or 50,000 emails with a five page Microsoft Word document attached to each. Surfing the internet, you could visit 30,000 typical web pages per month if you aren’t downloading files. A song download is about 1 MB per song (or 5,000 songs per month). Short internet video clips are about 3 MB, but downloading a 2-hour movie will use about 1.5 GB (that’s only 3 movies per month). We recommend downloading large files when you are connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet, which doesn’t use your 3G data allowance at all. In short, 5 GB is a lot of data for most users. This information is intended as a guide and actual usage and rates may vary.

Can I share my card between multiple laptops?

Your data service will only work with your wireless internet card. You can easily move your card from one computer to another, but it can only be plugged into one computer at a time. Multiple computers can access the internet through a single laptop card if the card is used to power a 3G Wi-Fi router, provided that all PCs are in range of the router’s hot spot. Another alternative is a MiFi, now available with certain carriers. A MiFi has a built-in wireless internet card and allows up to 5 devices to connect simultaneously to the internet via Wi-Fi. Think of it as a mobile hotspot you can control.

Do wireless internet cards work on Macs as well as PCs?

Yes. Most of our wireless internet cards work on both Macs and PCs. Just make sure to choose a card that’s compatible with your laptop.

How do I know which wireless internet card to choose?

Wireless internet cards are distinguished by how they connect to your computer. Some connect via USB, and this may be the best option for you if you are unsure what type of card is compatible with your laptop. Also, there are several 2-in-1 cards available now that come with an Express-to-PCMCIA adaptor, thus allowing the card to be used in either an Express slot or a PCMCIA slot.

When you are activating U-Verse voip please make sure that the customer doesn’t have ringmaster service if they do please advise the customer that this service must be disconnected and they will lose the ringmaster number, U-Verse is not compatible with ringmaster if this service is not disconnected the customers voip order will not go through! Also advise the customer that voip is a digital service if a customer has a fax that is not digital it will not work and they will need to purchase a new digital fax. Please also explain that voip is not like a regular line that if they loose power the voip has a only a 2 hour battery back up and after that they will not have a home phone. Many customers do not know what voip is a digital service (Voice over internet protocol).

AT&T has a new package for texting when roaming overseas. The package cost $10 and gives you 50 free out going messages. That breaks it down to $.20 a message and anything over the 50 included in that package is $.40.

The incoming text that you receive when roaming internationally is bill at your current home package. That means if you have unlimited text you can receive unlimited text when roaming internationally. If you have the $5 200 message package at home then that 200 would apply for your incoming texts when roaming internationally.

This was great news for international travelers because without the $10 roaming text package you will be billed $.50 for each outgoing text and $1.30 for each MMS (pictures, video) messages.

For more information on this and any other of the roaming packages call AT&T international department @ 877-707-9208

Yesterday I changed my Sprint wireless phone number. I had a Dade County Florida number with a 305975xxxx and wanted a Broward County cell number.

I could have called Sprint and ask them for a number change since I now reside in Broward County and opened my account years ago in Dade County. They would have done a number change with no cost because of the new location I live in but I wanted a cool number and decide to find the number first. Sprint would not have giving me a choice of numbers to pick from free and the choices would not be as good as I could find myself.

So I activated a at&t prepaid account. The new account allowed me to pick from a list of phone numbers. I found a few good phone numbers like 954xxx9999, 954xxx1234 and 954xx55555. The number with the 5s has 6 5s in the number so that is the one I picked to activate. It did not matter what prepaid plan to pick, I would never use this number on at&t. I did not even have to put money into the prepaid account.

I called Sprint after I got the number and told them what I wanted to do. I wanted to replace the existing 305 # with the new 954 # that I have on at&t. The representative at first said I could not do this because I would need to open a new Sprint account. I asked her to check and after being on hold she proceed to try and help me port the number but said she was having trouble so I got transferred to the department that does the porting of phone numbers for Sprint.

The new Sprint representative asked me the normal questions what number I am porting, account number and any password. The representative did the port and then told me the phone would work for voice calls in 10 minutes and for data in 30 minutes. I waited an hour and tried to make a call out from my Sprint phone with the new cool number but the call did not go through a message said that this call is not authorized. I then realized that the new number had to be programmed into the phone. The representative who help me port the number should have helped me do that. Now I had to call customer service again to program the number into the phone.

The second call to Sprint was different it seemed to have been routed to India or some overseas call center. The new representative was very polite more so than the previous reps. I explained what I did and that I needed programing of the number and he understood. It took him and I about 3 minutes to program the number into my Sprint phone which by the way is a LG Rumor. After the programing was done the rep asked me if I was happy with his service. I said “yes”. He then told me that I would receive a survey about our interaction. He said that he hopes and preys that I would give him high marks and asked me if I would give him high marks. I obsessively said “yes” to him, I was not going to say “your accent sucks and I could not understand you” but that’s a joke he was good and helpful, I just thought it was strange how he asked me.

This whole number changed could have been done on one call using less resources and time by Sprint and by me. The new number was worth the little hassle for me. 954-xx5-5555

My Sprint Plan is grandfathered $15 month 1500 minutes, first incoming minute free, unlimited text, unlimited data and voice dialing.

My plan with at&t before the ANR line was a $39.99 plan with 600 rollover minutes, 5000 mobile to mobile and 5000 nights and weekends. I also had $14.99 for unlimited incoming calls, $30 for unlimited Blackberry Data, $15 for 1500 messages and $4.99 for insurance my total bill after tax is $109.
Now I pay $35 before tax for 2000 minutes with unlimited nights/ weekends, mobile to mobile, unlimited messaging, unlimited Blackberry, insurance and 100 minutes video share.

I avoided making this change for years because I did not want to lose my control over my line. Now that I am on a ANR line I have to ask permission for features and I can not use the Apple iPhone. Before I got the ANR line I would swap back and forth from the iPhone and Blackberry.
These days times are hard and anyway we can save money is a good thing.

AT&T charges $2 a megabyte for data on mobile phones that are set up pay per use. Not a bad deal for some customers but a great deal for AT&T.
Yesterday I was going over a customers bill and saw the were charges of $2 every month for data pay per use. The usage shown on the bill was 1 kilobyte of data per month.
I asked the customer what she was doing on the web and she told me that she hits the web button on the mobile phone by accident. This customer said she does not want that charge every month for an accidental push of a button. That button was place badly on this phone and many other AT&T mobile phones.

I could block the data on this customers mobile phone but this customer has an unlimited family messaging package that with the data blocked would not be able to send or receive picture or video messaging, which is unlimited with the messaging package.

This new billing procedure is unfair to customers. A lot of mobile phones have the web access button right in the middle and can be accidentally hit at anytime. A customer would have to call every month to get a credit for the $2 or block the data completely.
We need to tell AT&T to change the mobile phones so the web will not accidentally get accessed or change the way they are billing customers for data.

They could make it a 3 step process to log on the web and have a setting which can change the 3 step to a one step for advanced users. Its not like the have to invent a program or develop a new technology.

AT&T will increase their ARPU with deceptive billing practices once more. This new billing of data change should allow customers to break contract because of the contract being changed by AT&T.

Recently Sprint change something in their contract and allowed customer to cancel without penalty because of the change.

This holiday season was supposed to be great because at&t stated to us that we would be getting the Apple iPhone in the early part of November. We are not able to sell the Apple iPhone until at&t makes some changes in our contract allowing us to authorized to sell the Apple iPhone. If we are caught selling the iPhone we are in breach of our contract and may lose our at&t dealership. November came and went with no iPhone for any at&t indirect agents. This hurt in this economy, not able to sell the most sought after mobile phone in history. We turn away scores of potential customers because we don’t carry the device that everyone wants.

Luckily for us the new Blackberry Bold 9700 was released at the end of November. We are Blackberry experts at our store locations so when it was to be released on November 22nd we had already been selling since November 18th. We were picking up in sales at the end of November but we started off so slow we would not reach our goal for the last quarter. Then the Blackberry devices were dropped in price for the holidays and the buying frenzy begun. We still have 2 days left before Christmas and we surpassed or sales goal already. The Blackberry and the reduced price helped us throughout the season. We are thankful for the help we got but still resentful for not having the iPhone. I can only imagine what our sales would have been if we had the Apple iPhone in our stores for the holidays. I know one thing the at&t corporate stores would have suffered because there customer service sucks.

Now we can only hope for the best in 2010. The Android phones and the new Sony Ericsson PDA phone will help shake up the market spurring sales and I know we will eventually carry the iPhone. Next year look for new at&t plans with expanded mobile to mobile with all carriers like Sprint is offering now and more non contract offerings.

This morning Ralph de la Vega discussed the state of AT&T’s Mobility and Consumer Markets business at the UBS 37th Annual Global Media and Communications Conference in New York City. The conference featured senior executives from more than 100 leading media and telecommunications companies from around the globe.

A replay of de la Vega’s remarks can be found here (select Windows Media Player), and look for a brief video interview with him to be posted on Insider Thursday afternoon. Here’s a brief recap of his presentation:

Our leadership position in wireless
Aggressive focus on network investments and improvements
Best technology path forward
Our emerging devices leadership
Strong U-verse TV growth
The power of One AT&T
What sets AT&T apart
AT&T’s leadership position in wireless, especially wireless data

Our wireless growth is impressive. Over the past year, in a weak economy, we led the U.S. wireless market in net adds and increased our subscriber base by more than 6 million customers. Compared to our major U.S. competitors last quarter, we were:

#1 in gross subscriber additions
#1 in total net adds
#1 in postpaid net adds
#1 in smartphones
#1 in total wireless revenue growth
#1 in total churn
#1 in postpaid ARPU (average revenue per user/month)
and in postpaid ARPU growth
What’s driving these results? Excellent nationwide coverage. A strong network handling unprecedented data traffic. Great marketing. A terrific device line-up. And our smart technology decision a few years ago to go with GSM, the global network standard. And most importantly, our strategy to put wireless data services — and advanced wireless data devices — at the center of our customer experience. As a result, twice as many smartphone customers have chosen AT&T than any of our competitors.

Our focus on network investment and improvements

To deliver on the great potential of mobile data, we have an aggressive network investment program to further enhance our wireless network and customers are benefiting. There’s always more to be done, but we have a high sense of urgency and are on the right track.

When you look at drive-test results by an independent third party:

On a national basis, our 3G data throughput speeds are faster than the competition.
Based on independent drive-test data, the difference between AT&T and the industry leader on a national level on dropped call percentages is less than 2/10ths of a percentage point…which translates to a difference of less than two calls out of 1,000.
Root Wireless, a new, independent network performance monitoring company not affiliated with AT&T, just released data comparing wireless carriers in several markets including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago. The data showed our 3G network outpaced Verizon’s, producing far fewer peaks and valleys in network capacity and much greater data speeds.
Our own internal metrics tell the same story. Over the past year, our internal network performance measurements indicate overall quality is up more than 25 percent.

These improvements reflect a number of initiatives, including near-completion of our 850 MHz spectrum to 3G — that delivers strong in-building coverage. We are adding some 2,000 new cell sites this year, adding 100,000 new circuits to strengthen backhaul, doubling our number of fiber-served cell sites this year. And there’s much more to come. We will continue to be aggressive in investing to strengthen network performance.

Best technology path to capture data growth

The mobile data revolution is still in its infancy…there’s huge opportunity ahead of us…and the great news from our perspective is that our technology path puts us in the best position to capture that growth going forward.

When you compare our path forward with that of our CDMA peers, there’s a major difference that involves technology and timing. It comes from HSPA 7.2, which is largely a software enhancement for GSM-based networks. HSPA 7.2 speeds are a major step up — they double theoretical peak speeds. We already have the fastest 3G network in the U.S., based on independent tests. With 7.2, the nation’s fastest network is getting even faster.

Most important? HSPA 7.2 is ready now — and we are deploying it now. We will have this technology up and running in six markets by the end of the month…and we plan to be launched in 25 of our top 30 markets by the end of second quarter next year.

Customers will see the difference and experience the benefits of 7.2 very soon. We already have more than a dozen HSPA 7.2 compatible devices, including iPhone 3GS, feature phones, smartphones, laptop devices, with more to come.

It’s easy to talk about LTE, but it will be some time before we see a rich set of devices to run on that technology. Meanwhile, HSPA 7.2 is being adopted and deployed around the world…devices are coming on board quickly…and we believe customers will be thrilled with the speeds. It’s an important competitive advantage for us over the next few years.

When you put it all together, HSPA 7.2 already has a rich set of devices and provides a customer-friendly transition path to LTE…combined with our industry-leading Wi-Fi coverage, we are putting in place the industry’s most powerful set of network capabilities for mobile data connectivity. That’s exciting for us…for customers…and a major opportunity.

U-verse TV growth

Lots of good news about U-verse this year. We surpassed the 2 million customer mark today.

Our deployment is on track: We now pass more than 20 million living units, and are on track with our plan to pass 30 million by the end of 2011.

Our operational metrics continue to improve… install times and intervals continue to move in the right direction — and we surpassed the 2 million customer mark today.

And most importantly, U-verse is delivering in a big way for customers.

We ranked highest in the JD Power survey for residential TV customer satisfaction in the West and South regions, which align with our wireless Southeast, Southwest and West regions. This was the second consecutive year.
We continue to add new features and HD channels — and the technology has proven itself.
Across all eligible living units our U-verse TV penetration is now above 12 percent. In areas we’ve been marketing to for 24 months of longer, overall penetration rates are now more than 20 percent. And looking at homes marketed to, in green areas where we compete head to head with cable, our research tells us U-verse is taking roughly 60 percent of the TV flow share

Our emerging devices leadership

Our network today handles two times as many smartphones as any of our competitors. And our postpaid integrated device penetration is still in the low 40-percent range. So there’s still huge upside potential in integrated devices. Beyond that, emerging devices represent the next wave of wireless growth, and our network provides the connectivity.

Some time ago, we set up an organization devoted specifically to developing new products and new ideas in the emerging devices space…and that work has paid off.

Today we are the clear leader in emerging devices connectivity: like e-Readers and personal navigation devices. Plus we offer a host of net books. And in the area of machine-to-machine connectivity, wireless services is just getting started. Everything from medical monitoring to metering and industrial applications.

The power of One AT&T

One AT&T is a powerful advantage for us — to be able to offer wireless, broadband and TV solutions in a seamless, single and unmatched approach.

We can create integrated and converged services that combine wireless and wireline. We can take content and applications — many of them exclusive to AT&T — and make them portable across the TV, PC and wireless screens. We can combine customer care platforms, billing and support systems. That’s a powerful advantage for us, and it further sets us apart from the competition.

What sets AT&T apart?

Despite economic pressures, we have a strong growth record in key areas that will define the future: wireless, U-verse and IP-based services. We have a proven record of disciplined execution on the cost side of our business. We are strong financially.

AT&T has significant areas of opportunity ahead:

Best technology path to capture wireless data growth
Leadership in integrated and emerging devices
Upside potential in wireless margins
Solid momentum with U-verse growth
One AT&T

This information is from http://blog.telephonyonline.com

As Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ, NYSE:VOD) and AT&T (NYSE:T) argue on TV whose network is fastest and most ubiquitous, independent performance testing firm Root Wireless has put their claims to the test, mapping out the performance metrics of all of the big four’s 3G networks in seven major metro markets. The findings were surprising. Though AT&T has taken a huge public relations hit for poor coverage and capacity on its high-speed packet access (HSPA) network, Root found that it’s network performed best in almost every single category from average download speed to level of connection failure (See TelephonyOnline’s related analysis of AT&T and Verizon’s networks). Root’s complete market data can be seen after the break.

ADD A LINE TO YOUR FAMILY PLAN

All four operators, however, had their strengths and weaknesses. Sprint (NYSE:S) has the highest coverage networks on the books: typically 90% of its footprint receives receives signals of 50% or greater of full strength. But Root found that Sprint also had the highest data connection failure rate, as high as 15% in Seattle, while the rest of the operators kept their failure rates well below 5%. So while Sprint 3G customers are getting more bars consistently, they’re much less likely to actually complete a data session.

Though T-Mobile (NYSE:DT) was the last to deploy its 3G network, it has managed to build up coverage quite quickly. In five of the seven markets Root tested, T-Mobile’s 3G build out is comparable to its three competitors’. Only in Seattle and San Francisco does it significantly lag the others–surprising considering T-Mobile USA is headquartered in Seattle. Also, though T-Mobile’s HSPA network is much newer than AT&T’s–Cingular was the first operator in the world to deploy HSPA–it’s still much slower than AT&T’s. In several markets AT&T’s average download speeds were as much as double that of T-Mobile’s.

While AT&T seemed to run away with the prize in most of the performance categories, there was one area where weaknesses in its network design were evident. While AT&T had high signal strength in much of its metro footprint, that signal strength tended to fall off rather rapidly outside of those hotzones. In most markets, 30% to 50% of AT&T’s footprint received half-strength signals or worse, which in part explains many of the lack of coverage and capacity complaints AT&T has received from many of its iPhone customers. And that’s that’s to say nothing of Verizon’s most damaging argument: AT&T doesn’t offer 3G service to 25% of population.

At&t and other communication providers offer bundle packages that offer discounts for the bundle.Besides the convenience of one bill and the discounts you get you are also helping out the environment by using one bill. That means less paper and less of a carbon footprint. I already had paper less billing done for my at&t cell phone. The bill is sent by email and I can go online and look over all the call details and charges. My home services bill is mailed to me.So I decide to combine my home services with my wireless. My home services is one basic phone line with caller id and call waiting and 6.0 DSL. My wireless is a $39.99 grandfather in plan with 600 minutes with rollover, 5000 m2m and 5000 nights and weekends. I have extra features like unlimited text $20, Blackberry data $30 and unlimited incoming calls $14.99.After combining my services I realize that I could not pay me cell phone bill again over my cell phone using the *729 service. This service allows customers to pay their bill over an automated system with a check or credit card. When I called in to at&t customer service I was told that I had to mail the bill in I could not pay by phone anymore since I combined the bill. I told the agent I was worried that my account would go into pass due. She assured me that when I combined the bill a waiver is added to my account so I would not have a problem. So thinking my bill would be combined by the next billing cycle I over paid my land line bill to cover my wireless bill. When I called into at&t land line customer service (18887576500) I was immediately transferred to the collections department. I asked why I was transferred to that department the at&t representative told me she did not know I had a credit on my account. I explained to her that I combined the bill and I was worried that my cell phone would go into pass due status. She said don’t worry also the combination is noted in the computer. Now when the bill is finally combine I will see if I have any savings. I also added U verse to my at&t line up and that is to be installed July 17th which is today. I will write more when I get the bill and the U verse service.www.WirelessConsultant.net
