I just got an interesting call from Blackberry support they wanted to inform me of the new updates. I don’t use a Blackberry currently so I was a little confused why the called me and it was because I have written a few post about Blackberry in the past. I told the representative that I did buy a Blackberry Playbook recently and wanted to know about the update that is coming out and if it will bring the Android Market to the Playbook. I was told yes it will have the ability to use Android application but not all the applications at the beginning. Each application has to go through a approval with Blackberry before being allowed on the Blackberry Playbook. I ask about the camera on the Playbook because I was very upset to find out that the only video conference application was from Playbook to Playbook only. I was hoping Skype would work with the new update but it will not at the beginning until Microsoft which owns Skype and Blackberry work out the details. The Blackberry representative did tell me he uses Real Portal to Video chat with someone using a Apple iPad now.
The Blackberry Bold and the Torch will get an update that will allow Near Field Communications, Wifi calling and Mobile Hotspot capabilities. This update will first be available for Verizon Wireless and Sprint Blackberry devices.

I just read an article on 3 tablets, it breaks down the difference between the different tablets with price points from 200 dollars to 500 dollars. The 3 tablets in this article do not subscribe to any cellular services. They all need WiFi to access the Internet for browsing, downloading books, applications and any streaming media.

I use the Motorola Xoom which is a LTE 4G tablet on Verizon Wireless. My tablet does what the Nook, Kindle Fire and iPad do and has its own built in service. I can use my tablet anywhere on the Verizon Wireless Network and it has its own built in hotspot that I can allow up to 5 other WiFi enabled devices connect to the Internet.

Verizon Wireless has phones that are great for visually Impaired customers needs. I recently got a call from a friend of a previous client he wanted me to help him find a phone for the visually impaired. I did a little research and realized a few Verizon Wireless phones have the ability to speak all of the functions. The phone has voice readouts and will speak all the digits when dialing the menu functions and the incoming text messages.
I showed the client two phone models when he met me at a Zephyrhills store. One was the Samsung Haven which is a basic phone without a camera or Bluetooth technology and the other was the LG Octane a phone with a QWERTY keyboard for texting. Both phones did what he wanted but he was a big texter so the LG Octane was his choice.
My smartphone also has the ability to speak all the commands but I never tried the texting part of it to see if it would read the incoming text but I am sure if the phone did not have that capability there would be an application for it.

Turn your Smartphone off once a day and pull the battery out once a week for best performance. If you are like me and use many applications daily you should do the recommended procedure above. This will stop unnecessary applications from running in the background and prolong battery life daily.

Some people like using a task manager application to stop applications from running but these task killer app use more memory and power than they save. Android phones with 2.1 or newer software have a built in task killer and adding a task killer defeats the purpose.

Yesterday I had a client complain his battery died after a few hours. After examining his HTC Incredible 2 I realized he had downloaded a battery saver application and that was the culprit. That app ate up 72% of his battery so we deleted the app and problemsolved was solved.

The older versions of Android operating systems did require a task killer but Android learned from this and corrected the issue with later updates and all new Android phones are already equipped with battery saver and app killer options.

Read this article below from Motorola concerning turning your phone off.

So you’ve decided to get a tablet PC, but you don’t know how to go about choosing the right solution for your needs. Here are a few tips that might help in your decision.

1. First and foremost which is the hardest decision….which operating system do I want to go with? Do I want to go with a chosen leader for ease of use like the Apple iPad? Do I want to have the freedom to add widgets withing Android Honeycomb? Or are you still addicted to your BlackBerry (in an Apple and Android World) that you want to continue the legacy with a BlackBerryPlaybook? This isn’t the easiest of decisions. The last quarter of this year we will see an influx of Tablet makers and this is one decision that cannot be judged by price and specs. Is it for social networking, remote access to your server, or just looking for an easy way to access your company mail on the go.

2. Next…this decision doesn’t get much easier. Which screen size should I choose? They typically range from the small 7 inch screen to the large 13.3 inch screen. Remember, that bigger isn’t always better or more expensive. Unlike desktop monitors, tablet monitors are meant to be small and handy to carry anywhere. Choose a screen that you are comfortable with, but remember sometimes the bigger they are the shorter the battery life will be!

3. What kind of performance are you looking for? Single core processor? Dual core processor or does it even matter? With a world of tablets coming to the table performance doesn’t always = price. The best “bang for your buck” might be in the middle of the road so avoid the most expensive tablets (unless you have money to burn) and check the consumer reviews of the models you have in your sights.

4. Are you looking for expandability? Determining what type of ports might actually determine which operating system you choose. Typical ports include Type I and II PC card slots, SD card reader, USB ports, VGA port, docking connector, microphone jack, and headphone jack, but Apple limits you to only the microphone jack so expandability is what your looking for than an Android tablet might be what your looking for. Take into account what you might be doing on this tablet in a year to make a better informed decision. 5. Battery life is more important than you may think! Here is a great Wiki that shows a complete comparison of the available models out there with their run times. Once you find a style and OS of your future tablet, make sure it meets your demands for battery life.

The Mobilewiseguy will help guide you with all the different choices and features so contact me.

What does this mean, what can this union provide. Well I have a opinion on what this means. When I saw the Skype acquired Qik I realized right away that’s how Skype was going to integrate video conferencing with computers and mobile devices.Qik’s technology worked great to stream video from mobile phones to the web live so that would be a great fit for Skype. Now Microsoft wants Windows to be the main platform used for all devices to do video conferencing so what better to buy the best company to bring that all together Skype.

I wanted to do quick video and post it to the web using my cell phone. I thought it would be easy to take the video and then upload it from the phone to YouTube so it can be used on my Blog.

I only can take a short video with my Blackberry Bold 9700 and send the video through MMS to YouTube. The video is sent as a multimedia message to YouTube and the anyone can see your video on YouTube. After the video is uploaded to Youtube it can be link to websites and or Blogs.

The issue I have is that a MMS video is only 30 seconds and the quality is not as good as normal videos that can be taken with the Blackberry Bold 9700. A normal video can be hours long as long as you have room on your media card.

I have a few other ways to upload longer and better quality videos to YouTube. First is after taking a good quality video with the phone take my media card and use the SD adapter to upload the video from my laptop to YouTube.

Secondly is my Motorola Backflip an Android device let’s me upload videos taken with it directly to YouTube without the 30 second restriction. I am sure it has something to do with Google owning Android mobile operating system and Youtube. My first test was a 5 minute video I took waiting for the draw bridge to open. I realized later more than 2 minutes took way too long to upload directly from the cell phone.

Then I remembered using an application on my Blackberry Bold 9000. It is called Qik, this application allow you to stream the video live and the video can be an hour or more. I stopped using Qik only because it is not supported on my Blackberry Bold 9700. Qik works on many devices Android, iPhones, Windows Mobile and some models of the Blackberry.

Qik is the easiest way to put videos on the web.

Check out some videos on my Qik website.

Two weeks ago I could not listen to my favorite application Pandora on my Blackberry Bold
9700 which is unlocked from AT&T and being used on T-Mobile data only.
I have used all my applications for over a month without any problems on T-Mobile.
The Bold 9700 unlocked from at&t works only on EDGE which is 2G on T-Mobile, it will not work 3G on other carriers, but I had no problems on the EDGE, I used all the functions, applications including Pandora.

Now about two weeks ago when I tried to use Pandora I was getting an error
(Critical tunnel failure). It would not sign me in to the Pandora application.
So I deleted Pandora and re installed it, that didn’t work. Next I wiped my Blackberry clean, which puts it back to factory settings and erases all of the content, applications, settings and contacts.
I then reinstalled all my previous contents. That did not work also, I then
decided to download another music radio application to use in the mean time so I downloaded Slacker Radio. Slacker worked for a day then prompt me to re-input my user name and password. I did but Slacker gave me an error saying it was wrong. I then had to reset the password and it would work for a few minutes, then prompt me to re-enter the user name and password again and again.

Now I am of the opinion it was something in the Blackberry software that was causing Pandora and Slacker not to work.

I did some research on the web and came to the conclusion that it was my APN setting. The setting was still set on AT&T which was (wap.cingular).

I put a call into T-Mobile tech support who then transferred me to RIM support and after explaining the problem and stating it was an unlocked Blackberry from AT&T the tech from RIM then told me the APN setting for T-mobile is wap.voicestream.com.

Now Pandora and Slacker is working properly and the fix was simple. The APN
setting is under options, advanced options then TCP/IP. The T-Mobile setting
does not have a user name or password so un-check that box. At&t had
wap@cingular.com and the password was blanked out.

manager but could not find one. On my Blackberry Bold 9700 when I held down the
Blackberry button I can see what applications that are open select the running
app then close it. The Motorola Backflip does not have that option built in.

I found an application on the Android market place call advanced task killer
that let’s you shut down all your applications. It will give you a check list so
you have the option to leave some applications running. I recommend this app for
all Android users.

I have been listening to Pandora almost everyday in the gym while I workout and just recently I started hearing an advertisement on Pandora. I have heard that you hear ads when listening to Pandora from a computer but I did not know ads would be played on my mobile.

I am not complaining Pandora is my favorite application on my Blackberry and I use it so much so what I hear and ad now once in a while. They used to only have ads on the screen when I looked at the Blackberry device but now after a few songs I hear one ad.

The one ad seems to come every half an hour and that ad has been the same ad over and over again. Springhill Suites is the only advertisement I hear on Pandora. I have not had any ads played before and now only Springhill Suites.

I would think Pandora would have me in their data base as a listener that selects high energy music around the same time almost every morning. This would mean I use the music for working out or energizing myself in the morning. Then the ads should be targeted for me with workout ads or energy drinks, something that would be more relevant than Springhill Suites.

I got a tweet today saying the WordPress app was upgraded for Blackberry. So I went to Blackberry App World and downloaded the WordPress application.
This post is being done now from my Blackberry Bold 9700. I was able to put in the tags and pick the categories within the application.
This is a lot faster than doing the post in the Bolt browser like I was doing before. I even took a picture and placed it in this post. The video that I took was to large I think to upload from this application so I had to delete and repost.
This is a great application to do my post so far. I can write to multiple Blogs. I am now beginning to use this application and will keep everyone updated with what I like or dislike about this WordPress app. This is a free application on the Blackberry App World.

Letter to 27,625,631 Nav4All navigation customers

Dear Customers,

It is with the deepest regret that we hereby notify you that the
global navigation of Nav4All and the Tracking & Tracing will go
offline in 3 days. The reason for the same is that the data licence
agreement with Navteq (a 100% Nokia subsidiary) was not extended, in
a totally unexpected manner. It is not possible to implement data
from another supplier in our Nav4All systems within the short term.
The Nav4All navigation system was developed for Navteq data. Nav4All
has therefore been constrained to stop.

We greatly regret the fact that we have to suspend the operation of
our service. With your help, we have developed Nav4All into a global
product with 27.5 million users in 56 languages, in 5 years. This has
made Nav4All the largest navigation supplier. This large number of
users also has to do with the fact that Nav4All works on hundreds of
different mobile telephones of many makes such as Blackberry, Sony
Ericsson, Samsung, Motorola, Android, HTC, Nokia, LG, Iphone, Ipod
etc.

After 5 years of testing and market development, we witnessed rapid -
in fact, exponential – growth during the last two years. That growth
was reported in the licence reports to Navteq. In mid-December 2009,
the global coverage was extended to include the Philippines, Morocco
and Kenya.

Please contact the Nav4All support desk in case you have any
questions: www.nav4all.com/support. If there is any further
information from Nav4All concerning the subject of this letter, the
same will be published on our website: www.nav4all.com. For reasons
of privacy, Nav4All does not have the email addresses of all its
customers, and we therefore request you to forward this email to the
maximum extent possible, in order to ensure that everyone is
informed.

Kind Regards,

I am using a WordPress application that I downloaded to my Apple iPhone to do this post. I have not updated this Blog in a few days and Thanksgiving and Black Friday went by and Cyber Monday is around the corner.
I am so used to typing on my Blackberry I dreaded to use the iPhone to update my Blog with a new post.
But I am missing the boat I need to be writing about all the mobile phone deals offered online and adding my affiliate links for people to buy these mobile phone offers. The offers out there are much better than the deals you can get in the stores and I just need to tell the world where to find the best cell phone deal online that fits their specific needs.
They cell phone consumer might just need a new line on their family plan or they might want to change their cell phones to new models and depending on the situation the online cell phone deals are different.
For example I will not be able to get a free Blackberry if I am not qualified to have my upgrade and it depends if I am the primary line or secondary line. The online cell phone deals are different depending on the plan, if it’s a new line or upgrade, primary or secondary line and what features you might have to get. The good thing is that I am affiliated with most of the mobile phone carriers in the United States so if I have consumers click my affiliate cell phone links I will get credit (paid) and since it’s the best deals online with my help showing you how to and where to place the cell phone order I should do well.
That’s my goal for this Blog and my other website http://wirelessconsultant.net to be able to direct the cell phone consumer to the right deal for their cell phone needs with my help and direction. I also have my web guy Frank Madison helping me with how and what I need to do to be successful at online marketing.

RingCentral bundles small businesses VoIP, call routing, faxing, voicemail, and more, saving over buying several services.

Zack SternPC World Tuesday, September 15, 2009; 12:19 AM

I’m scraping together phone service for my startup, mostly relying on mobile numbers that my contacts already know. But I’m considering Internet telephone alternatives, such as VoIP calling to save money.

Some online phone services combine the routing magic I like from Google Voice with more VoIP and business features. One example, RingCentral, sells a small-business tier of service with these functions in mind. RingCentral partly replaces traditional lines and partly supplements them.

On the routing side, the RingCentral website stores the existing phone numbers for you and your employees. When a call comes in, RingCentral rings one–or any concurrent combination–of those numbers. Extensive rules can send calls from certain contacts to certain lines. Or you can route calls based on the time of day, including sending someone to voicemail in off-hours instead of ringing your phones.

RingCentral Office includes a local area-code number, an 800 number, and a dedicated fax-line number for $99/month. Plus, the basic service includes an additional, direct number for each of four employees. (Cheaper bundles are available with fewer numbers.) You can add more incoming numbers for $25/month or upgrade to an 8-line bundle at $179/month. The service also lets you port over existing numbers so that you don’t have to update contacts with new details.

While I think I’d get the most out of these routing services, RingCentral also includes VoIP outgoing calls as part of its monthly base fee. You can make unlimited calls across the country on a SIP phone, while international calls cost extra. However, if you carry a SIP handset when traveling abroad, RingCentral will keep it locked to your local, home number, letting you dial back home without any extra charge.

Many additional features could answer your telephone needs. Voicemail boxes store messages online and can email them as audio files. You can configure a greeting and menu system for incoming calls. The RingCentral-provided fax line handles incoming and outgoing pages.

RingCentral’s flexibility is its best value, combining VoIP service, number routing, and more. Small businesses could save money versus buying many dedicated services. And since one company provides these functions–RingCentral even sells pre-configured VoIP hardware–you’ll save additional troubleshooting and configuration hassles.

Zack Stern is building a new business from San Francisco, where he frequently contributes to PC World.â

Yesterday I had a customer come into my store and said he wanted to see the internet web pages like on the Apple 3Gs iPhone. He did not like the at&t browser Media Net. The websites like MSN and Yahoo did not look the way that he was used to seeing on his computer. The at&t Media Net browser displays the web pages in a mobile phone format which is a simplified version of the web page. I took his cell phone and in 3 minutes I had the Bolt browser up and running. This new browser surprised this customer, he was so happy with the browser that he was going to go home and download the browser in all of his family members cell phones. So far I have the Bolt browser on my Blackberry Bold, Blackjack 2 and on my Sprint LG Rumor. I first tried Bolt about a week ago. mobilewiseguy.com/2009/07/31/bolt-new-web-browser-for-blackberry.aspx My first post about Bolt browser Since that day everyone that I showed the browser too and have a Blackberry have commented that the Bolt browser was the best they have ever seen or used on a Blackberry device. I am able to do so much more with my Blackberry with the Bolt browser. I was limited before editing my Blog or website but the Bolt browser allows me to do edits and see pages that I could not do unless I was at a computer. I recommend everyone to try this browser. I will be testing this browser and many others on different cell phones so keep coming back for my updates.

I have a problem with my application memory leaking on my Blackberry. I have spent weeks and hours on the phone with Blackberry support to fix this issue. On this post I am copying and pasting my emails onto this Blog so you can read our interactions and what I was told to do.

Hello Curtis,

I am sorry to hear that the issue persisted and that you were unable to get the logs from the hand held. I would like to thank you for working with us to try and isolate this issue. Unfortunately, the logs provided did not provide us enough insight as to what was causing the memory loss.

I am glad you got a new hand held and hope that this one brings you more luck in the way that Blackberry is supposed to function. If the issue occurs with the new handheld, I would request you call in on a new ticket. Though if you refer to this one, all steps will be listed on what to do. This is not a common function of the handheld and we do take it very seriously. We want all of our customers to have a positive experience with our product.

I will mark this case as closed at this time, though we can always re-open or refer back to it if needed.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact us.

Thank you again for contacting us.

Sincerely,

I could not duplicate sending the logs. My Blackberry is losing application memory the same way and I do not have any applications downloaded.
I have decided to switch the Blackberry Bold out with the warranty exchange program with at&t.
I have been on the phone with Blackberry support for over 3 hours and weeks have gone by without any results.
I tried to do everything that the Blackberry support team has asked me. If I had a client with the same issue I would advise to switch the unit out because it is defective and I would not want them to spend the hour on the phone with support and not be able to use their Blackberry properly for weeks.

Thanks for you help.

What did the logs say that you got from me? The memory was already leaking out when I sent those logs. I was at 12MB when I sent those and that dropped from 31MB to 12 in a day.

Hello Curtis,

As per our conversation, I would request you do the following to isolate the issue.

Every day I would like you to document the following.

Every day I want you to get the Handheld Logs after you document the handheld information. Go through the following commands.
In the Command prompt copy and paste the following.

cd C:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader

In the Apploader folder to get the log type the copy and paste the following command, don’t forget to rename the filename.

loader /eventlog c:\handheldlogs\filename.txt

Make sure to have the .txt at the end of the name otherwise it won’t create the text file.

Hello Curtis,

Your handheld still has the Vlingo app which is most likely the cultrate in this situation. I would recommend that we backup the handheld, Security Wipe it erasing all applications. Make sure Vlingo has been removed, then restore the backup and only install those applications you need (No Vlingo 2.0). We would enable logging as well just in case the issue persists.

Vlingo has released a 3.0 version which is now available, it could be the older version had issues. Though this new version costs money.

Let me know what applications you are planning on installing before you proceed to install them. This way I can try and copy your configuration. If you would like me to call you in regards to this issue, let me know a time and number to best reach you.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact us.

Hello Curtis,

Here are the instructions on how to enable handheld logging and get the logs from the handheld

1. Can you perform a test on a good and bad handheld and provide fresh BES logs, screenshots from the handhelds and the handheld logs. (this is to clarify issue for possible escalation)
Prior to test, enable Handheld Logging
From the main screen on the handheld, hold down the ‘ALT’ button and type the letters “L G L G” once you let go you will be in the EventLog
Press in the ‘Menu’ button and select “Options” and change the Min log level to “Debug Info”. Then save your settings.

When you have reproduced the issue, go through the following steps to get the handheld logs and information.

You will need to either have the BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.7 installed or WEBSL which can be downloaded from www.blackberry.com/upgrade.
Once installed, navigate in DOS to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader, or on a dual core system, C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader.

I would like you to gather the handheld logs and Device Info. Here are the commands needed.
- Eventlog loader.exe /eventlog “c:\outfilename.txt”
- Deviceinfo loader.exe /deviceinfo “c:\outfilename.txt”

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact us.

Hello Curtis,

I am sorry that you are still having the issue. I don’t beleive that this is a hardware issue and replacing the handheld may not resolve this. I would like to help you resolve this issue if possible, if you can let me know a date and time that would best suit you for a call back so we may hopefully resolve this issue. As well if you can provide the call back number that you wish me to call.

I wanted to start using vlingo to write my blog this way I can speak and vlingo will transcribe it into text. The accuracy of Vlingo is not to good to make a blog. Vlingo seems to be good for short texts, emails or notes. The time it takes to edit the mistakes in the wording you might as well typed the blog the whole way through yourself. I will play a little more with it and see if it can be tweaked to be more accurate. This entry below is an unedited Vlingo entry on my task then cut and pasted into this blog entry. (i want this entry to be completely from vlingo i’m speaking broccoli and slowly to see how accurate vlingo will transcribe my voice to text and then i will coffee feast this in to my blog stating this is totally done from the vlingo application)As you can see the accuracy is definitely not the best. I contacted Vlingo about this issue and they replied with below. Thanks for your feedback. We hope in this email to be able to improve the speech recognition performance that you experience with Vlingo.Speech recognition Vlingo uses highly advanced speech recognition technology to deliver the best accuracy possible. As with humans, it will sometimes misunderstand what you say. The answers to the following questions provide information about how you can improve the accuracy of the Vlingo speech recognition. What if I am somewhere noisy? If there is a lot of random background noise like street noise, car noise, or background conversation in a loud restaurant, hold the phone closer to your mouth and speak louder. If the background noise is distinct conversation such as a nearby radio or someone talking near you, Vlingo may have more difficulty distinguishing your words from theirs. Turn down the radio or move a bit further away from the other conversation. If you are in a very quiet environment, you can speak more softly. A good rule of thumb is to adjust your voice as you would for someone sitting next to you to be able to hear you clearly and distinctly. How should I hold the phone?Hold it either as you would when you are on a call, or with the phone a few inches in front of your mouth. How loudly should I speak?Start out by speaking as you would to another person. Experiment with speaking somewhat louder or softer. How long should I speak? You may be surprised that it’s easier for Vlingo to recognize several words at a time than to recognize just one or two words. Try varying how much you say, and see what works for you.Any other accuracy suggestions?• Be sure to pronounce words clearly but naturally.• Do not pause between each word.• Begin speaking shortly after the audio tone finishes playing. Release the side key shortly after you are done speaking. Long periods of silence can cause Vlingo to pick up background noise as intended speech. How does Vlingo learn over time?Vlingo gets better the more you use it. It begins to adapt to your voice as quickly as the first few times you speak to it. The learning continues as long as you use the product. It also learns the words, phrases, and sentences you commonly speak. If Vlingo makes a mistake and you correct it, Vlingo will learn to avoid making the same mistake again later. Vlingo also learns from what other users say and uses that knowledge to improve its accuracy for you. What languages does Vlingo understand?Vlingo is currently implemented for English, and is optimized for U.S. (iPhone and BlackBerry) and U.K. (BlackBerry) dialects. Other languages and dialects are in development and will be added over time. We hope this helps you get the most out of Vlingo.Best regards,Vlingo Support
